Emerging from Darkness
Oscuridades
Oscuridades, Spanish for both “darkness” and “obscurity,” is a photographic series of images taken of Gabriel’s anatomical reconstructions from his Thesis Exhibition. They each feature varied degrees of obscurity to explore how incomplete the specimen is and how unreliable the methods of reconstruction used are. Consider the difference between the Cleo and Lucy photos, Cleo is a modern ape who was a part of the studies published in PLOS One; she is a fully known entity and is far more in the light and prominent in the frame. Lucy, AL 288-1, is an approximately 4 million year-old fossil skeleton and is missing facial and cranial bones to the point that it’s unlikely that Lucy’s face will ever be fully reconstructed.
