Meet Lucia
One of the first full-body anatomical reconstructions performed by Gabriel during the early years of his research with his colleagues was AL 288-1, more famously known as Lucy. That sculpture formed the basis for this marble carving.
In 2018, Gabriel joined the Digital Stone Residency program in Gramolazzo, Italy. The premise of the residency is for artists to design a 3D object digitally and they’d be milled using 7-axis mills in Marble. Artists would then travel to Italy and have just under a month to finish their sculpture using classical and modern tools.
This was the first piece where Gabriel used drapery as an analogue for unknown aspects of his subjects. It was inspired by the fact that after finishing the sculpture of Lucy, he no longer felt confident that her appearance was any more accurate than mere artist conjecture and so began designing future studies. Thus, Lucia, the ghost or unknown embodiment of who Lucy may have been emerged as an artistic reprieve from the scientific work.
